Emergency Naloxone Keeps College Students Safe!

Transitioning to college represents a significant milestone in a young adult’s life and provides an ideal opportunity to reinforce principles of safety and preventive health.

Unintentional opioid overdoses among young adults can occur in social settings and not just among individuals with chronic opioid use. Having naloxone readily available can save lives.

Naloxone is a life-saving emergency medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose by restoring normal respiration through blockade of opioid receptors in the brain. Including naloxone nasal spray as part of a personal or dormitory first aid kit promotes preparedness and helps normalize its use, thereby reducing stigma. The medication is safe, easy to administer, and available over the counter.

Please include discussing naloxone when talking to patients (and their parents) going off to college. The life they save might not be their own.
