Medicare Part D Enrollment is Open
Pick Your Plan Before December 7th
Medicare Part D open enrollment is here. Medicare Part D is the prescription drug program offered through Medicare. The program offers prescription medication insurance coverage through different plans. Each plan has its own formulary (the list of medications it covers), premium (the cost the member pays each month to carry the insurance), deductibles (the amount the patient must pay before their benefits begin, and copays (the amount the patient pays at the pharmacy cash register). Patients are allowed to choose their plan for the following year during open enrollment, which runs from October 15 through December 7. Since plans change from year to year, all patients with Medicare Part D are encouraged to shop and compare each year to ensure they choose the best plan for them.
A few things to keep in mind:
- The best plan for you is based on the medications you take and the pharmacy you use.
- Spouses often take different medications from each other and therefore may have different plans that would be best for them.
- Your medications may have changed since the last time you enrolled in a Part D plan, so it is important that you look at all the plans available during each open enrollment period.
- Plans can change every year what they charge and what they cover, so it is important to look each year at all of the plans available. Everyone knows someone who has been on a medication that was working, only to find out in January that the plan will no longer cover it. Even if your plan did not change, another plan could have changed and would now be more cost-effective.
- Patients are encouraged to look at all costs associated with a plan to determine which one is best. For example, a “preferred pharmacy” may only save a patient $12 per year, but cost that patient nearly twice that in gas as they drive to the nearest “preferred pharmacy.”
- Wisconsinites are fortunate to have access to Seniorcare, a prescription drug plan for patients 65 and older offered by the state of Wisconsin. It is a more cost-effective plan than Medicare Part D, but benefits are based on income. Talk to a Forward Pharmacy staff member to see if you might qualify.
- Forward Pharmacy is proud to be in-network for most Medicare Part D Plans, but please note that Wellcare, Anthem MediBlue, SilverScript SmartSaver, and Elixir Secure will be OUT of network at Forward in 2024. Please call us for help choosing a new plan for next year as soon as possible!
- If you got a letter in the mail from your Medicare Part D plan stating that some of your medications won’t be covered or that you can’t continue using your local pharmacy, don’t worry. Come into Forward Pharmacy and talk to our trained pharmacy staff. We’ll find the right plan for you that can save you money and allow you to continue coming to your local pharmacy.
Some of the best people to help you find a plan that is right for you work at Forward Pharmacy! We look at your medications and help you decide which plan is best for you, so don’t hesitate to stop in or give us a call with any questions before open enrollment ends on Dec. 7.
